The psychotic soliloquy of O Rei Imaginário reveals itself as a dramatic exercise of this tragic feeling of life transversal to the entire work of Raul Brandão (1867-1930). Teles, a magistrate who finds himself confined to the walls of a dungeon, utters words that echo in cloister, vain: born of an illustrious family, he later fell into disgrace. Starting from this premise, the character establishes a multiple and fragmentary, disconnected discourse; Thus, Teles faces loneliness running after the dream, an evasion created by illusion – in short, an anesthetizing mechanism that allows expelling the pain of existence.
In the year that celebrates 150 years after the birth of Raul Brandão, let's hear the echo of Teles, that absolute king.
