Beckett wrote this radio play in 1956, which was first broadcast on the BBC's “Third Program” in early 1957. The myriad references to sounds and scene indications quickly transport us to a strange universe of panting characters, bent by destiny, some misshapen and almost grotesque. The story takes place in what could have been any rural location, on a path between the protagonist's house, the fat old Mrs. Rooney, and the station, to which she goes to meet her blind and sick husband, who comes home for the weekend after a week of work. A carter offering manure, a retired broker, a horse racing official or a station manager, cross paths with Rooney and in every meeting the dialogues are twofold: they fluctuate arrhythmically between trivial matters, taciturnity and thirsty self-pity of affection. Mrs. Rooney's body, in decay, objectified, drags us along with her, in this sound and melancholy text, of infinite interpretive possibilities. In the midst of all this, one thing is certain: It's a great day for the races.
